What do peak performance, chronic depression and anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder, learning disabilities, obsessive-compulsive disorder, oppositional behavior and epilepsy have in common? The answer is that each is created by the brain. Peak performance occurs when the brain is able to do a particular job in a highly efficient manner; the rest are symptoms produced by a brain that is malfunctioning and not able to perform as it should.

I didn’t used to think this way. For decades, I thought of peak performance as “hard work,” and brain problems as “diseases” or “disorders.” After all, this is what my life and my medical training had taught me. It wasn’t until I started searching for an answer to a question that I had this revelation: Problems with attention, learning, behavior and mood are not really “abnormalities.” Compromised or restricted performance is simply an indicator that the brain is not functioning as it should!

My new insight into the brain, human performance, and brain training evolved from a personal quest. After working in the medical field for over 20 years and seeing enough suffering to last a lifetime, I decided to switch gears. “Was there a way,” I wondered, “to overcome attention and learning problems, and become more successful in the classroom and at work?” A decade and a half of intense research later, I had accomplished my goals (and then some). We are, in this moment, able to create a new world, one in which problems with attention, learning, behavior, and mood are resolvable…quickly, and without drugs. And, as it turns out, there is a huge bonus. Humankind can now overcome the limitations of brain compromising emotional and physical trauma, genes, and environment to rise to new levels and possibilities. We are now able to create a new world, one in which problems with attention, learning, behavior, and mood are resolvable…quickly, and without drugs.

What is this breakthrough, you may be asking? I call it NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training. This website describes this remarkable breakthrough in human performance and possibilities.

What Is Neurofeedback?

The electrical conversations of the brain

brain testingWe are able to go about our day because our brain talks to itself with highly complex waves of energy. These internal dialogues allow us to pay attention and focus on what is going on in our world, to remember what it is we want to know or need to do, to go to and stay asleep, and to color our life with emotional actions and reactions.

Medical professionals have known about these electrical conversations for over 60 years, using a devise called the electroencephalogram (EEG) to record the brain waves. Neurologists (medical doctors that diagnose and treat diseases of the brain and nervous system) find the EEG indispensable, looking for distortions in the brain wave patterning to help diagnose seizures and manage epilepsy, and to help diagnose or rule out a brain tumor, blood clot or stroke in those with such symptoms as blackouts, headaches or unusual behavior.

The introduction of inexpensive desk top computers in the 1980s allowed advanced brain wave analysis systems to move out of the research laboratories and into university and private sector facilities. As research evolved, it was soon revealed that the Quantitative EEG offered more potential than the detection of brain disease; the technology offered the potential of expanding the EEG from the disease model into a quantifying function, that is, to let us know where and in what way the brain is functioning efficiently and where it is performing poorly.

As interest expanded, biofeedback researchers discovered that when the power of the Quantitative EEG is combined with traditional biofeedback techniques, the brain could be led to enhance its own abilities. Electrodes placed on the scalp pick up the brain’s electrical energy; the brain wave signals are sent to the special computer, which amplifies the signals and rapidly segments the complexity of the brain wave frequencies into small groups of energy; The Neurotherapist selects a frequency group known to be important for focus, strategy, or memory, and returns the information back to the brain as audio tones. As the brain “listens” to the computer-generated audio information, it senses and analyzes the tones, just as it does with all incoming information. Noting the one-to-one relationship between the incoming tones and the nerve cells (frequencies) it is using to perform the task, the brain begins to experiment by increasing or decreasing the energy at that frequency. Finding that increasing the energy improves its performance and decreasing it makes it worse (or vice versa), the brain begins to activate (or deactivate) cells to enhance and maintain the new level of performance.

How NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™ Works

Teaching your brain to mentally heal

depressed girl

Understanding how NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™ works requires thinking about depression, anxiety, ADHD, learning disabilities, Bipolar and OCD symptoms in a brand new way. It is not a drug treatment, so it does not act as a drug in the brain and body. There is no “active ingredient” so there is no possibility of serious side effects. It does not “treat” any “disease,” nor does it act in a drug-like fashion to suppress symptoms. In fact, NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™ is more training that treatment — a neurological tutor or coach for the brain so it can function at efficient levels.

Those able to perform at high levels have brains structurally and functionally capable of doing what nature designed it to do – precisely and “on demand.” On the other hand, the brains of those with attention, learning, memory, and mood problems are not functioning with efficiency. There may be:

  • Inappropriate slow, lazy brain waves that are overwhelming the faster frequencies required for peak focus and attention;
  • “Working” frequencies may be deficient and not available for specific tasks (such as reading);
  • The brain can become energetically “locked” into a particular brain wave pattern and not able to efficiently shift from task to task.

In any of these scenarios, the brain is not able to do its job efficiently and quality of life suffers. The brain is so smart, it can fix itself, unless…

We humans are fortunate indeed that our brain has an innate intelligence, being designed by nature to survive and perform to the full extent of its resources. Inherent in the design are physiological mechanisms that allow the brain to rapidly adapt to sudden and unique conditions and environments. The major advantage is that if the brain is physically damaged, say from a traumatic head injury or stroke, it immediately begins to repair itself to the extent of its resources. When the brain senses its remedial efforts are as complete as its resources permit, it “locks” the improvements into place. This “locking in” process is nature’s insurance policy – it is how nature strives to increase its chances of survivability.

As valuable as Neuroplasticity is, it can also lock in compromised performance, even the ability to shift moods. Long-term improvement after injury slows to a halt, and future gains in learning and earning potential become difficult, seemingly impossible.

As demonstrated daily at The Sams Center, if the dysfunctional and inefficient brain is given highly specific information on how it is functioning, it will unlock the compromised patterning and use the external resource to further improve function. The inattention, learning difficulties, memory problems, or disabling moods diminish and may well fall away all together.

NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training’s™ answer to attention, mood, and behavior issues is dramatically different than anything found in traditional medical, psychological, or educational systems. Its objective is to offer meaningful information to the brain on how it is performing. Using this input, the brain can, on its own, restore or create optimum functioning.

The Six Techniques Toward Healing

How to help your body work at its peak

Athlete Waiting at Starting Line Remedial Neurofeedback (Brain Wave) Training™
What kind of job would you do if you didn’t have a mirror to shave or to put on your makeup? What would your makeup look like? How would you know you did a good job? As simple as it is, a piece of reflective glass is a biofeedback system. A mirror allows us to instantly collect and analyze a tremendous amount of information. Based on the feedback, you can perform very complex tasks easily and effortlessly. Remedial Neurofeedback Training™ acts for the brain as a mirror acts for you and your face – it gives instant feedback for enhanced performance.

In the typical Remedial Neurofeedback Training™ session, the trainee (and, therefore, the trainee’s brain) is given a complex task to perform – usually a commercial video game requiring the manual manipulation of figures moving in space. As a result, the visual centers in the back of the brain (Occipital Lobes), the strategic functions of the Frontal Lobes, the memory and auditory processing of the Temporal Lobes, the spatially oriented Parietal Lobes, the Sensory Motor Strip (where the brain senses incoming information and mobilizes the body to perform a specific task), and the Supplementary Motor Area (the brain region activated when we want to do something intentionally) are all engaged in processing and executing highly complex activity. With all this is going on, an additional and even higher level of activity is presented to the brain: An audio tone derived from the frequencies the brain is producing in order to play the game. The brain is being “told,” as it works, how it is responding to and executing the game’s challenges. With this feedback, the brain uses the information to improve how it is playing the game.

In the same way that a mirror allows you to shave without cutting yourself or to put on makeup without smearing the lipstick, the feedback tones allow the brain to fine tune and make critical adjustments to its performance.

Remedial Neurofeedback protocols were scientifically created and developed by Dr. Marvin Sams and are exclusively available at The Sams Center. These sessions are clinically proven with over 25 years research and experience and are shown to enhance intellectual functioning, focus and attention, mood, memory and emotional resilience.
Interactive Normalization Neurofeedback Training™ in DFW / Plano uses an advanced computer technology that continuously tracks ongoing brain wave patterning and rapidly compares it to those of normal subjects. When the brain moves its neural firing closer to normal functioning, within a fraction of a second, the brain receives an audio tone. In other words, the brain uses this information to rapidly understand when it is functioning at optimal levels. When the processing and attention parts of the brain get immediate feedback on how it could do a better job, it “automatically” adjusts the over firing and under firing nerve cells quickly and easily. Coherence (communication) and Phase (timing) are also calculated and corrected.
Targeted Deep Brain Neurofeedback Training™
When the deep “emotional brain” (limbic system), “attention brain” (prefrontal cortex) or the brain’s “gear shifter” (cingulate system) become over or underactive, depression, anxiety, unstable behavior, and obsessive thoughts and behaviors can occur. Highly evolved software and ultrafast gaming computers allow direct training of these deep brain structures, permitting rapid neurological training of deep brain function. Problem areas targeted, dysfunctions are quickly restored to optimal levels.
Transcranial DC Modulation (tDCM)
Transcranial DC Modulation (also called Transcranial DC Stimulation) has been extensively studied over the past several years. A recent Goggle search yielded 313,000 hits, with many university research papers published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Research and clinical studies have shown that tDCM improves symptoms of Depression, refractory epilepsy (drug resistant seizures), Migraine headaches, Bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), learning, dexterity in stroke, memory in those with Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia pain, and bulimia.

TDCS produces a gentle DC current (measured in thousandths or millionths of an ampere) that is applied to the scalp with moist sponge electrodes. A mild prickly sensation might be felt at the beginning of the session that tends to go away after a minute or so.

In the briefest of terms, the DC signal modulates (normalizes) brain function by calming parts of the brain that are too active and energizing underactive areas. To understand the details of how Transcranial DC Stimulation works, a quick Internet search will yield a number of studies for your perusal.
Heart Rate Variability (Breathing) Biofeedback Training
Learning proper breathing for emotional resilience is an important part of the NeuroMatrix training process. While Neurofeedback and the other technologies positively affect the Central Nervous System (brain), proper breathing helps balance of the Autonomic Nervous System (the “flight or fight” response).

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a biofeedback process that teaches specific breathing patterns that help regulate our heart rhythms and connect our heart and brain for emotional resilience. Stress causes our breath to be fast and shallow, resulting in the heart’s beat-to-beat timing being erratic and our brain deprived of oxygen. This irregularity takes us even deeper into sympathetic arousal (the “flight or flight” stress response), which further increases the stress.Optimum emotional resilience occurs when we slow the breath and the heart beat locks to the breath, beating slightly faster as we inhale and slowing down a bit as we exhale.

The training process is like playing a video game with your breath. The training objective is simple: to smoothly and steadily breathe in for five seconds and out for five seconds. A signal corresponding to the pulse variability is seen on the computer screen for guidance. Graphs show how much time is being spent in low, medium, and high coherence (the time the heart is locked in step with the brain). As training objectives are achieved, the signal will be smooth and regular, and points accumulate for the score. A focused calm follows.
Documenting Progress
To measure progress, a Quantitative EEG is done each training day and statistical comparisons are made to the initial QEEG evaluation and the previous session. Normative Reference Database reports are also run periodically to further evaluate improvements in under and over firing brain areas, communication networks (Coherence), and speed of information transfer (Phase). This attention to detail allows the determination of how much progress has been made session-to-session. To our knowledge, this important benefit is currently offered only at The Sams Center.
What to expect
Symptoms typically reduce as training progresses, usually starting around sessions 10 to 12. Many will complete the training in 30 or so sessions, though those with a history of trauma, drug use, or complex symptoms will likely require a few more. It is further expected that as the brain gains experiences by interacting and communicating with people and the environment, improvements will continue over the next several months after training is complete.
A brighter and brighter future
When our brain has sufficiently improved its efficiency, our moment-to-moment ability to function at higher levels “just happens;” No additional effort is required on our part. And, just as we can jump on a bike years later and our brain quickly “remembers” how to do it, our brain and nervous system doesn’t forget what it learned with NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™. Focus, learning, mood, and memory get better and better over time.
